Genealogy -What’s been happening this week?

Here is a round up of this weeks new genealogy records for the period 13th August 2017 to 20th August 2017.

1891 Census

Ancestry have updated the 1891 census – not sure what this means as I had assumed that they had all the information online when they first published it. Perhaps it mean they have amended all the corrections that their subscribers have sent in. I know some people feel they shouldn’t be Ancestry’s correction department, but I figure that I know my ancestors better than they do and will notice errors that others wouldn’t. So I do post in corrections when I come across mistakes.

UK and Ireland Obituary Index

The UK and Ireland Obituary Index 2004 – 2017 has been updated. So if you think someone in your family tree would have had a write up they might appear on this index. Worth a quick look.

West Yorkshire Roman Catholic Oath Records

West Yorkshire Roman Catholic Oath Records 1714 – 1787 & 1829 have also been update probably for the same reason as the 1891 census I am guessing. If anyone at reads this they could email me at and let me know what updates involve?

Nothing new has been released this week, just updates.

FindMyPast has been busy as always and their Friday releases are as follows.

Buckinghamshire Baptism, Banns, Marriages & Burial Transcripts

FindMyPast calls these indexes, but they are actually almost a transcript as far as I can tell. They have been created by FindMyPast using the original records kept at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies. I note that some of the transcripts have been provided by Chris Daniell. Thank you Chris.

Hopefully we will see digitised copies of the actual records go online soon as there is nothing as good as seeing the original for yourself.

Ireland Calendar of Wills & Administrations 1858 – 1920

Ireland started to publish calendars of wills from 1858, as regular readers will know I love wills! They are a real insight into family relationships (who is included as well as who isn’t), property ownership etc. Very helpful addition if you have Irish ancestry.

The following have been added to the ever growing list of newspapers scanned and indexed.

  • Tenby Observer
  • Brechin Herald
  • Milngavie and Bearsden Herald
  • Alcester Chronicle
  • Abergavenny Chronicle
  • Ripley and Heanor News and Ilkeston Division Free Press
  • Eastern Daily Press and the Colchester Gazette

So hotfoot over to FindmyPast if you want to search the new records.

Nothing new from FamilySearch this week.

British Newspaper Archives

British Newspaper Archives have added the Brechin Herald and Angus & Mearns News 1890 – 1892. A short lived publication by all accounts. This paper covers both of the historic eastern counties of Angus and Kincardineshire. The Ripley & Heanor News and the IIkeston Division Free Press has had more pages added 1899 – 1957.

That’s all for this week, hope the new records have been useful to you.
