The Illustrated London News has been added to the Gale Newspaper Archives. These online archives are available through public libraries and educational institutions. So to search these archives get down to your local library and ask if they are subscribing to the Gales Archives and if not why not!!

Here is a quote explain the addition by a Gale publisher…..“The Illustrated London News Historical Archive 1842-2003 will help students, enthusiasts and those interested in genealogy to research social history, fashion, theatre, media, literature, advertising, graphic design and politics," says Seth Cayley, publisher at Gale Cengage Learning EMEA. "As an eyewitness to the past, it offers pictorial insight into events across the world."

Index New ZealandGreat site for background information. The index describes over half a million articles gleaned from magazines, journals and other publications. Sadly you don’t get to see the actual article, but it does give you the information you need to order the publication through your local library.

You may well be surprised to find how many times your ancestors appeared in The Times newspaper. Stories big and small appear giving many details that wouldn’t be found elsewhere. This website is a pay site, £4.95 per day, but many libraries have a subscription that allows their members to access the database from either the library or from home. Check your local library for further details.

Gale Newspapers Online Archive

Gale Newspapers Online ArchiveI have written before about Gales database of British Newspapers 1800 – 1900 which is available now to the public on a subscription basis. The latest news is that they are offering two titles free of charge – the Penny illustrated Paper & The Graphic. I did a quick search and came up with plenty of references to names that i am researching.
