East Devon Tithe Maps

clip_image002East Devon comprises 29 parishes and the Tithe Maps for these parishes have been digitised and are now freely available online. The site notes that the map for Rousdown is not at the Devon Record Office and the Sidford map is yet to be scanned.

A nice, straight forward easy to use to website with just one click to get you to the actual map.

Ordnance Survey Ireland Historic Maps

clip_image002Did you know that the Ordnance Survey of Ireland offer free online access to their historic mapping archive? Of course they would like it if you purchased a map whilst visiting their site, but to view the maps online is free, very helpful to pinpoint where the Irish branch of the family came from.

Domesday Book Online

clip_image002Have you visited the National Archives Labs? This is the website where they try out new things before adding them to the main site. Always interesting to visit and well worth bookmarking so you take a look regularly to see what’s on offer.

The latest offering is the Domesday Book, you can search by place name and they say post code (bet they didn’t have postcodes in 1086!). You can then zoom in and out and around. A copy of the relevant page can be obtained for £2.

North Yorkshire Record Office

clip_image002This site has a feature which I am sure we would all like to see other record offices copy. I am talking about the online historic maps. You can choose maps dating from 1846 – 1954 and search by address, place name or postcode. Lovely feature, just wish Hampshire & Berkshire had the same on their websites!
