Here is a website about shipwrecks in the West country. The site tells us that between 1849 and 1860 no less than 6,883 lives were lost off the west country coast. I found it was easier to work round the site by using the sitemap, you can access this by clicking on the link at the top of the page. Seems an interesting site if you suspect that some poor ancestor got lost at sea. There is a database describing 100,000 wrecks since the year 1100, but there is a fee charged for this to be searched.
