Having visited Calke abbey a few years ago, also visited st Giles church in the grounds.

The gravestones to the left of church looking from front are in the names of a lot of Woodwards,my question is what would they have done on the estate, also christian names are also in my family.

Hi

Your best approach to find out what the Woodwards who are buried in St Giles Churchyard, Calke Abbey did would be to search the burial registers for St Giles. This may tell you their occupations. The burial registers will most likely be with the Derbyshire Record Office.

Calke Abbey which is now in the hands of the National Trust will have had some estate records which may contain information on your Woodward family, again these may be with Derbyshire Record office or the National Trust.

Finally the Fins A Grave website http://www.findagrave.com/ has some Woodward entries for Woodward’s at Calke Abbey.

Hope this helps you, a Google search for the record office, National Trust etc will give you email addresses for them.
