baptismal records

Dear Linda, I have an ancestor John Shadrack Dorman who gave his details as: born in Southwark, London about 1828. Father William and mother Ann. He gave his occupation as  butcher in Southwark.

I cannot find any record at all of him or his family (he came to Australia in about 1856 for the Gold Rush).

Can you tell me if baptism records for Southwark are available for the period about 1825 – 1835?

thanks,Rosemary

Dear Rosemary,

Thank you for your query about John Shadrack Dorman.

There are 6 churches in Southwark; Christchurch, St George the Martyr, St John Horsleydown, St Olave, St Savious & St Thomas.  The parish registers for these churches are held at the London Metropolitan Archives and therefore are available on Ancestry as they have been scanned and indexed as part of the partnership between LMA & Ancestry.

I did a search on Ancestry and found the following:-
St George the Martyr, christened 26 December 1830, born 4 January 1830 John Shadrach son of William & Ann Dormer of Red Cross Street, Mi?d (possible a shortened word for Middlesex?), shoemaker.  The surname is spelt differently from the information you gave me, but I think this is your ancestor, especially as the second christian name is rather unusual.

I hope this is of help to you.

Regards;
Linda
