Ann Dorman died on 13th April 1843 at 2 Crosier St North, Lambeth, aged 34. Present at her death was Elizabeth Lewis (I don’t know if she was a relative). I have her death certificate so I know it is the correct date and place of death. Ann was a widow as her husband, William, a slate polisher, had died in 1839 at Red Cross St, St Saviour Southwark. I cannot find Ann on the 1841 census and I am wondering if she might have been in the workhouse. Her son, John Shadrack Dorman (born in 1830 in Southwark) was working as a servant boy (name spelt Dormer). Can anyone help me to find Ann Dorman in the 1841 census?
Hi
Thank you for your query. I have found an Ann Dorman living at Strand, St Clements Danes, Westminster. She doesn’t give an age and states she was not born in Middlesex. The reference for the entry is HO107 piece 731 folio 2/37 page 15. All the other Ann Dorman entries including variations on the surname and Ann with and without an ‘e’ seem to be wives so obviously not your Ann.
The 1841 census isn’t as helpful as the later census as they don’t give precise age, relationship to head of household or place of birth.
I can’t be sure that the Ann Dorman above is yours and I suspect that a positive ID will never be able to be made. Such a shame she didn’t live until the 1851 census when so much more could be known.
Sorry not to be more helpful,
Kind regards,
Linda
