British Post Office Appointment Books

I’ve just found my Vincent Hawkins of Little Coxwell, Berkshire on the new Post office Appointment Books 1737 – 1969 dataset on www.ancestry.co.uk. He was appointed sub postmaster in 1859. In the 1901 census he was aged 82 and was still working as the sub postmaster and living at the post office. For 40 years he was also the parish clerk and fitted in work as an agricultural labourer in his younger years. Obviously a very industrious fellow.

Coventry Family History Society –

This database contains some extracts from the register of boats working the Coventry canal. It covers the years 1879 to 1936 and is searchable on the surname of owners and masters.

Convict Register -

A copy of The Convicts Register is held in Coventry Archives under Reference 1755/1. This gives further information about the convicts including usually their photograph and sometimes details of their convictions. The page shown against each name refers to the page in the register. For a few names no page is shown as it is known to be missing. Some convicts had aliases and these have been included in the index.

Lascelles City Directory 1850 -

Trade directory for Coventry.

Plus details of how to join the Family History Society, their publications and Research Aids.

Andover Fire Brigade

Interesting web site based around a log book found by Vic Furze in the Winchester Fire Station when he was Officer in Charge there.

Scanned pages from the log, photos and a search facility makes this an excellent site for those whose ancestors might have searched in the brigade between 1908 – 1916 or who want some background history of Andover, Hampshire.

Essex Oaths Project
This Project was conceived in 2006 by Bro. Bernard Williamson and put to the Study Circle as a research project in which many of them, and others, could become involved.
It is a daunting project with well over 400 A3 pages, each containing some 40 lines of details. The details shown on these returns are the Name, Address and Occupation of lodge members for the year the return was submitted.

What a great site, I’ve just traced some of my Matkin family into the coal mining industry and this website has helped me understand their lives a little better. There is a searchable database of deaths in mining disasters which could lead you onto newspaper reports etc, maps, history and a photo gallery. Excellent site

Solicitors Index online at SOG website

The Society of Genealogists has an increasing number of online datasets available to their members. Those of us with Solicitors on our family tree will find this one helpful.

Solicitors’ index

clip_image002

This index was originally compiled on record cards and donated to the Society by the professional genealogist Brian Brooks in 2002. It was subsequently converted into digital form by Les Muriel. The coverage is not comprehensive and so it should only be treated as a finding aid. Some counties receive fuller treatment than others and it should be noted that since Mr Brooks retained the cards for London, Middlesex, Sussex and Wales no entries exist for these places. There is relatively little data on Scotland and India. The index was compiled from numerous sources including the following:

  • Law Lists: 1780, 1790, 1793, 1800, 1802, 1805, 1808-1828, 1830-1840, 1843-1849, 1851-1855, 1861. (The 1861 edition was sometimes used to show date of admission.) The Clerks of the Counties 1360-1960 by Sir Edgar Stephens, 1961
