Kent 1/4 Sessions & Court Files, 1600-1883

The latest update from FamilySearch shows that images of Kent Quarter Session & Court Files 1600 – 1883 are now available for searching. These aren’t indexed and you will have to search them page by page as we used to do in pre internet days !!

However if you haven’t used quarter session records before then you are in for a treat. They give so much information that isn’t found elsewhere. What a joy to have such records being scanned and now online.

You will need to sign up for a Familysearch account, but this is very easy.

Bodleian Library periodicals online

clip_image002Did you know that the Bodleian Library in Oxford has put some of it’s vast holding of periodicals online. Amongst the offerings are the “Gentleman’s Magazine” 1731 – 1750 and “Notes & Queries” 1849 – 1869.

Both of these publications have plenty to interest the family historian. The Gentleman’s Magazine has an index for each volume (one volume per year) and Notes & Queries also has a yearly index. I think to get the best out of these publications you need to browse through a volume to see how things are laid out and then dive into some research. A very wide range of subjects are covered in each edition including many announcements of births, marriages & deaths.

Take a look.

Parish Mouse

clip_image002

Until now the only time I have come across a parish mouse is when I have been handling original registers and found nibbling around the edges and a certain, distinctive mousey odour !!

However today I have come across the Parish Mouse website where this particular mouse is putting online transcripts from historical books that he/she has collected over the years. What a lovely idea and how generous of the Mouse to share with fellow family historians.

I had a look around the site, but couldn’t find a name for Parish Mouse, does anyone know who it is ?
