What next year holds for genealogists.

clip_image002In the Who Do You Think You Are magazine there is an article about what the major players are going to tempt the UK family historians with next year. Here is a round up.

Ancestry is saying that next year they will have the complete 1911 census online with "an enhanced user experience" whatever that means! Also will have Lancashire parish registers and at least 4 other counties parish registers (not saying which ones) Plus more major city collections all with original images and indexed. They will add to their wills & probate records and will have more army records.

Deceased Online will put up a further 600+ cemeteries in 2012 and part of this will be at least 35% of London burials and cremations records.

Findmypast will have it’s Crimes, Court & Convicts info online in 2012, but this may be on a sister website, Welsh records and info from Westminster Archives (I can hear my friend Sue cheering from here!!) and more FFHS member societies indexes. Naval records, UK electoral rolls and baps, mars & burs for British in India.

The Genealogist will have more of the 1911 census, more parish register transcripts, more wills, more non-conformist records and POW records.

British Newspapers Online will be adding thousands more pages from the British Library Collection.

So there seems to be plenty to keep us amused in 2011 Winking smile

Apps for Family Historians

clip_image002Genealogists have taken to computer and other technology like ducks to water! I am sure that the inventors and designers of computers, ipads, notebooks etc. did not envisage their target market as being people who spend their spare time head down in dusty archives!

Now however the spending power of the family historian is being wooed by the major brands of tech products. In the March issue of Your Family History magazine there is a good article on Apps for family historians, it reviews a range of products with price from “free” to £8.99. If you are the proud owner of an iPhone, iPod Touch or an iPad then get your hands on a copy of this magazine and see if something featured takes your fancy.

Money Saving Tips

Money Saving Genealogy TipsIn the July issue of Who Do You Think You Are? magazine is a good article containing 101 Money Saving Tips for Genealogists. A sign of the times perhaps, but a very interesting set of ideas how to trace your family history on a budget.

Genealogy Magazines

Genealogy MagazinesHas anyone noticed how difficult it is to find family history magazines on the shelves in book shops, newsagents and the like? I subscribe to a couple of magazines, but like to pick up copies of the others if they have articles that are of particular interest.

Now that Borders Bookshops have disappeared from the High Street it seems that the only way to get copies of Family Tree, Practical Family History etc etc is to pay out for a subscription. Is this the beginning of the end for specialist magazines?

One recent innovation is “Discover My Past England” & “Discover My Past Scotland”. These magazines are subscription based and are delivered via the internet so that you have the option of printing off a copy or reading totally online. The subs for these magazines are £2.50 per copy or £7.00 for three issues. The publication monthly and is 40 pages in length and the preview of the first pages seemed to be of a good standard. However compared to “Who Do You Think You

Are”’ which is 98 pages for a cost of £4.99 I think “Discover My Past” is a trifle expensive, especially as they don’t have printing, transport and seller’s commission to include in the price. What do you think? The new Mad About Forum would be a good place to give your opinions on the pro’s and con’s of genealogy magazines.

I was at the London launch of the Apple ipad recently and after having had a good play with the device I can see that in the near future we may all be having our magazines delivered and read via such gadgets. However tempting as it was I left the store without purchasing, my pocket at that moment wasn’t full of up to £699.00 of loose change! Also I must say that the clapping and cheering by staff after each and every purchase was a major turnoff for me!!

Pen & Sword Books publish an amazing array of book that are of great interest & value to any genealogist or history lover. I’m a great fan of their books and can recommend them. You can buy them through The Book Depositary which offers free postage worldwide, a great saving when some book sellers charge as much for the postage as for the book.
