What is the Berkshire Probate Index?

The Berkshire Family History Society have published on CD an index to the probate documents for the Archdeaconry of Berkshire and also some documents for the Peculiar of Faringdon including Little Coxwell, the Peculiar of the Dean & Canons of Windsor including Hungerford, Shalbourne and Wantage, the Peculiar of the Dean of Salisbury covering Arborfield, Aston Upthorpe, Blewbury, Hurst, Ruscombe, Sandhurst, Sonning, Upton and Wokingham.

The time period covered is 1480 – 1857. The index contains details of 38,000 people mostly relating to Berkshire. The CD has finding aids, 3 overview datasets and a full details dataset.

What can I expect to find on the Berkshire Probate Index?

You can expect to find

  • Full name of the testator.

  • Occupation

  • Details such as aliases, employers, status and relationships where given.

  • Abode

  • The type of document such as will, admons, inventory etc.

  • Berkshire Record Office references so that if a copy of the document is required the reference can be quoted when ordering.
